New Mexico Mountains

Matt and Sasha live at the base of the gorgeous Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque. We couldn't let such an adventure slip away. We set out at 9 o'clock in the morning with the goal of getting to the highest peak we could see from Matt's backyard. It's actually the peak right above Lilly's head in the picture below. We lost our way at the base of the mountain and ended up off the nice trail that would have led us to the top. Instead we took a much harder route that required us to literally scale parts of the rocky cliffs. All of us got pricked and stabbed at least once by the cacti that was everywhere. We still had a lot of fun exploring as we went. My favorite picture was the one above of Jon holding a very tiny Matt (you will have to click on the photo to zoom in). When we finally reached the top of the mountain it was almost noon. We had climbed almost 1,700 feet to an elevation of 7, 650 feet. We had this amazing view to enjoy while we ate some much deserved peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. It think this was our favorite part of the whole trip.

My other favorite part of the trip was anything Lilly did. She was such a great little traveler. Smiling at everyone! She has been doing quite a bit of climbing herself. She spent hours going in and out of our suitcases, helping us unpack even when we didn't need it.
