Lakefront Marathon 2008

I cannot begin to explain how proud I am of my amazing husband. Watching him run the marathon today was unbelievable. He has been so diligent with his training and worked so hard these last few months. I think back to all those Saturday mornings that Matt would wake up at 5am to do his long run for the week and leave me cozy in bed, or the day he had to do a 20 mile run in the pouring rain. His determination amazes me. I could not be more proud of my man.

Matt left the house at 6am this morning to meet up with his friends before the race. Lilly, Calvin and I were in the car by 7:45. Our first stop was Concordia University (at about mile 7.5). We were able to see all our friends at the first stop. Matt's friends Nate Jarot, Chad Nelson, and Andrew Arciszewski were all running the race as well so we had plenty of people to cheer on. Next we stopped at the Village Hall in Bayside (about mile 14). Matt was still looking great and made it there in under 2 hours! By that time we had to rush to get back in the car to get downtown in time to see everyone finish. It takes a little longer to get two kids in and out of the car that many times, plus I had to stop and nurse Calvin and change two poopy diapers!

Mile 7.5 - looking good...

Matt at mile 14 - still smiling!

By the time we made it down to the lake it had cooled off quite a bit. We stayed warm while we waited by singing songs and looking for Matt's green shirt in the sea of runners. We were so excited when we spotted him coming around the corner. We held up our "Go Daddy Go" sign and began to cheer. I was so proud of how far he had come and how hard he was working. It was fun to see how excited Lilly was to see Daddy run by. Matt finished his 26.2 miles in about 4 hours and 18 minutes. What an accomplishment!

After the race it was so good to see Matt and know that he was okay. He was extremely exhausted and cold but he was now sporting a medal! Way to go Matt. I am so proud of you and love you so much.

I am so proud of you Matt. You do so many things so well, including making me laugh out loud with your humor. Now you should let your body rest up a little. I love you!

Wow Matt! Awesome accomplishment. Mike and I decided that we would have passed out after the first mile. Congrats! By the way Gretchen, I love your blog and I am going to steal your idea of putting pictures of the kids on!! What a sweet idea of your beautiful children.
