Not the trip I expected...

Lilly, Calvin and I boarded the plane last Saturday for a trip to Aspen to see my parents while Matt went to Phoenix on a business trip. A few days prior Lilly had gotten sick but was seeming to be on the end of it so we didn't really think too much of it. We were on the plane only a few minutes when she threw up. Luckily it was all over herself so I quickly changed her clothes and she was fine the rest of the flight. Other than that, the kids were great travelers and the flight was actually really fun. They slept a little on the plane and played well at the airport. We were so excited to arrive, maybe a little too excited as Lilly hardly slept that night. We had fun playing at G&G's beautiful log cabin and seeing some sites in Aspen.

Lilly loves playing with my parent's dog Denali (who she called Wrigley most of the time).

After hitting the library and the thrift store we had lunch in Aspen.

By Tuesday, Cal's runny nose had turned into a cough, a fever, loss of appetite, vomitting and heavy breathing. After a restless night I was getting very worried about my little boy. So, as soon as we woke up on Wednesday morning we were off to the pediatrician. Within a few minutes of being there, the doctor knew it was RSV (Respitory Snycytial Virus) and we needed to get to the hospital right away. He was also very concerned that Cal wasn't getting enough oxygen. Aspen itself is at 8000 feet above sea level and my parents house is another 1500 feet higher that that so the altitude was making things even worse.

So the next few days were spent watching my tiny little baby hooked up to monitors and tubes, lay in a sterile hospital bed. X-rays showed he had some pneumonia and bronchiolitis as well. In a way it was a blessing that we were visiting my parents. They were so wonderful caring for Lilly and still making the trip so much fun for her. I however spent the next four days eating hospital food and sleeping on the most uncomfortable couch in the world. Calvin slowly started improving. It was so hard to not see him smile for those few days though. I was so excited when after a nice long rest he woke up and flashed me a big smile.

Grammy and Grampa took such great care of Lilly. She LOVED being able to see them so much. You can tell it was a rough week for me. I think this picture was taken the night that I got less than 2 hours of sleep.

Matt was beside himself all week as well. He was so concerned and loving and so worried about his baby boy. It was a hard decision for him to stay at his meeting but I'm glad he was able to. He checked in on us constantly and was praying for Calvin all the time. God took care of all of us this week.

We were discharged from the hospital an hour and half before out flight so I never made it back to my parents house to do all the things we had planned -snowboarding with my sister-in-law, cross-country skiing and my older brother even groomed a sledding hill for me. It was definitely not what I had planned but in the end God kept us all safe and brought us back home and we are so thankful for that.

Awwww Gretch! So scary! I'm so glad that God sustained you the whole way through and that Calvin got better. His breathing sounds so strained in the video... poor baby! Praise God for health!
