I picked up this book from the library and I thought I'd share some key take aways from "The Runner's Rule Book". It's a great collection of the "rules" of etiquette, lingo and common sense needed to fit in with running losers like me...
Rule 1.13 Keep unsolicited advice to yourself
Rule 1.14 Run against traffic (not with the traffic)
Rule 1.18 Learn to love the Farmer's Blow
Rule 1.46 Stand still at red lights (No need to bounce or jog in place. It looks like you have to pee)
Rule 1.48 Non Runners don't care that much about your running
Rule 2.1 Don't complain about the race entry fee - nobody's holding a gun to your head
Rule 2.8 Bib numbers go on the front of your shirt
Rule 2.23 Don't run with keys or loose change in your pocket - It' really annoying to those running with you.
Rule 2.32 Do whatever it takes to finish ahead of a costumed runner.
Rule 3.1 They're called "running shoes" - not sneakers, kicks, or trainers
Rule 3.5 Never wear the official race shirt during the race - wear it afterwards
Rules of Thumb:
Running on a treadmill is easier than running on the road
Stretch after your run - not before
Sick? If your symptoms are above your neck, you can still run.
Watching a marathon in person is the easiest way to motivate you to sign up for a marathon
A long sleeved shirt with shorts will always look better than a short sleeved shirt with tights
No one sleeps well the night before a race... The night BEFORE the night before the race is the important one.
Women who race in full makeup are never fast
You lose fitness faster than you gain it.
The more often you check your watch, the longer the run will drag on.
I hope this was helpful... if you can abide by these rules, you may now run with me :)
