Tips to start your own list of Goals

I've received a lot of feedback from friends (and some strangers) that they’ve been motivated to start their own challenge of 101 goals in 1,001 days.  I can guarantee that you'll get a lot of stuff done if you write down a list of goals.  Here are some tips to help you start…

Make goals that are measurable.

Some examples that could use improvement:

- Stay under 180 pounds

- Eat healthier

- Tell my family I love them every day.

A better way to list them:

- "Weigh in" every other month to assess physical/health needs (0/16)

- Try 5 new fruits and 5 new vegetables (0/5) (0/5)

- Journal once a month about my family (0/33)

Take your time.  This is something that you’ll be working on for almost 3 years – it’s worth taking the extra time to make sure you put down a solid list of goals that are important to you.  You’ll regret writing down a goal only to find that a month later, you never really wanted to do it in the first place.

Diversify your goals.  Ideas for goal categories (obviously not all inclusive!)

-          Spiritual

-          Places to Visit

-          Relationship

-          Health / Physical

-          Tasks

-          Things to Learn

-          Just for Fun

Make goals that are attainable in both the short and long-term.

Examples of short-term (one and done) goals:

- Volunteer for a day with Habitat for Humanity

- Go to a Bulls game

- Read a classic novel

- Eat at Milwaukee Chophouse

Examples of long-term goals:

- Learn 50 phrases in Spanish

- Run a marathon

- Remodel Bathroom

- Read the entire Bible

Have somebody hold you accountable – Now, you don’t have to broadcast your personal goals over the world wide web, but letting a friend or spouse know of your intentions and progress can greatly improve the odds of actually finishing your list.

I cannot stress enough how much I've really enjoyed working on my goals for the past 18 months.  I always feel like I'm working toward something and even a trip to Leon's Custard or a really big urinal can feel productive!  If you decide to go for it, I'd love to hear about your progress!  Good luck!
