When I made my goal list, I didn't realize how big a project Painting the Trellis would be. I envisioned an hour of chipping off loose paint and then 3-4 hours of painting. Upon further examination, I found that this was suddenly a much bigger project.
Gretchen and I (and Lilly) started chipping off the loose paint and then realized that the 2 decorative columns were completely rotten.
Carpenter ants had their way with the rotten wood on the inside. Luckily, the structural beam in the center was still in great shape.
A peek at what we were dealing with inside the columns.
Gretchen's always a happy helper.
I cut the trim to match the other three posts. I figured this was much easier than rebuilding the decorative columns and it makes for a cleaner look.
I tried to replicate the painted column and I'm really happy with how it turned out. All that's left now is some more minor construction, scraping, sealing, caulking and finally painting. At least the weather's been great!

Nice job with the beams! Yeah we have been struggling with carpenter ants too, but they are in the siding of our house!
Those carpenter ants are nasty! As far as I can tell, they haven't hit our house. Good luck with the siding!
