Summer Study

I have been doing a summer Bible study with some girls from church that has been such a blessing to me I thought I would share it. My good friend Elizabeth has been leading us through an in depth look at the book of Mark, and the best part about the study is that our only text (other than a few 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper) is the Bible. It is so simple yet it has helped me become better at reading scripture, finding the meaning and purpose and ultimately applying it's truth to my life. Each week we read 9 scripture passages and answer the same 3 questions.

  • Content: What is the passage about? (Just quick overview)
  • Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
    • Is there a warning, command or promise
    • Is there an example to follow?
    • What is revealed about God's character? (attributes, emotions, views, reasons to love him more)
    • New thought or encouragement?
  • Application: How can I apply this to my life?
    • Is there a current situation that is similar to what I have learned?
    • Ask yourself questions that demand answers. Do it - Apply it!
The intent is that you allow the Holy Spirit to guide your answers, not necessarily commentary or outside sources. What we have found in our Bible Study has been amazing. Sometimes in just 4 or 5 verses each of us will be lead or taught completely different things. We have found that God uses his Word to meet you right where you are. Often in passages that we have read repeatedly the Lord has revealed himself in a new way to us - proving that his Word is alive.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12
