So I'm doing an Indoor Marathon

It's official. I'm stupid. This morning I went downtown to be one of the first to sign up for the indoor marathon at the Pettit center on January 17th. I don't know what I was expecting. Registration opened up at a runner's store in the 3rd Ward at 10am. I got down there at 9:30 because the race's limited to 100 runners. I sat in my car when I realized there was no line of marathon runners waiting outside to sign up. I waited till 10:01 and walked in and signed up. After I was done, I asked the girl if I signed up early enough to be one of the lucky 100 and she just laughed. I, of course, didn't see a single other signee during this time. Then I started to wonder if the race would even fill up. That would be a scary thought if it was just me and 8 runner's store employees doing a 95 lap race. I wonder how many times I'd get lapped!?! Oh well, I'm in.
I'm excited for a few reasons:

  • It will be fun to be around people for the entire race
  • No hills on an indoor track
  • Perfect temperature for the whole race (55 degrees)
  • No other events to train for in the winter
  • It's super close to my house so I won't have to get up early that morning

Now, why this is a really dumb idea:

  • Training's going to be brutal in Nov, Dec and Jan
  • Here's the course map - O
  • I'm going to be lapped by the same people over and over
  • The awards ceremony might start while I'm still running

There's room for 3,000 spectators at the Pettit Center so that obviously won't fit all of my blog readers - otherwise, I'd invite everyone to come check it out. I'd think it would be a pretty exciting race from a viewing perspective. I'm almost bummed that I'm going to be running in it - I'd totally go down there and just watch all the runners go around in circles for 4 to 5 hours.

I have to say that your blog is one of the few that I find myself laughing out loud at. We'll be there to cheer you and the 8 runner's store employees on! There's just something that we can't resist about hamsters on a wheel...

Good job Matt. I was hoping that you would have that type of registration story. It's kind of like when we showed up to the noon showing of "Last Action Hero" on the opening day way early in order to be able to see the show. I think I remember about 4 other people being there. I hope some other people show up for it. Actually, I don't, it would be great if it was just you running. You could win!

I Laughed Out Loud too. Great blog Mattew. Keep showing up early for things you don't need to.
