Entryway Bench/Shelf

Gretchen's wanted a bench like this one from Pottery Barn for about 50 years.

I've told her all along that it's way too simple of a project for the $600 price tag that they want.  Finally, I got the motivation to actually get out in the garage and build it.  Here's the photographic proof... Oh, and this whole project cost under $50 - Boom!

A major benefit to building stuff yourself is that you can customize it to fit whatever space you want.  I made this 10 inches shorter than the Pottery Barn version to fit on our wall by the back door.

Putting the bench together here.

Cutting out the sides for the hanging shelf.  Band saws are fun.

The hanging shelf is almost done here.

I love my garage work space but it can get a little toasty.

All painted and ready for a good distressing.  We have found that furniture that looks "worn in" works best in our house full of young kids.

I sanded off a lot of the paint to bring out the grain and make it look broken in.

I rubbed a walnut stain over the whole thing.  This will tone down any color and also make the wood look older.  Wait - Is this trick photography?  How does my lawn look so awesome in this picture?

Both pieces all done and dry.  It is so nice to have a place to sit and get shoes on.  The extra storage will be great too.  It won't be long before I get used to it enough that I stop making Gretchen stop and sit at it every time we go out the back door.  I am not above fishing for compliments from my wife :)
